from an idea by Garey Southern

for by grace have ye been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, that no man should glory.

Ephesians 2:8-9

We are saved by the grace of God through our faith in Him. But what must I do to be saved?

The apostle Peter was asked that question almost 2,000 years ago, and it is still being asked today. His answer is found in Acts 2:38, "And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Listen

To start, we must hear the Word of God before we can respond to it. Romans 10:17 says, "So belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ." That's what happened to those people so long ago. They listened to the Word as Peter preached.

Believe

Then they believed what he preached. They believed that Jesus was the long awaited Messiah, the Son of God, and that He had died on the cross for their sins.

Repent and Confess

That belief led them to repent, to turn away from their sinful past and to follow Jesus. Romans 10:9-10 says, "because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved: for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made into salvation."

Be Baptized

Finally, those people were baptized. "They then that received His word were baptized; and there were added unto them in that day about three thousand souls." says Acts 2:41.

That was the plan of salvation 2,000 years ago. Or you may have heard it called the Roman Road. Pretty simple: listen, believe, repent, confess, and be baptized. And it hasn't changed in all that time. But if you need more help along this road, please contact any of us at Haywood Hills.
